What should have been a typical Sunday for families around the country was instead a day of confusion, questions, grief, and loss, as everyone woke up and heard news of the mass shooting in Orlando.
What should have been a typical Sunday for families around the country was instead a day of confusion, questions, grief, and loss, as everyone woke up and heard news of the mass shooting in Orlando.
When I woke up this morning, I found my mom sitting in front of the television with an inquisitive look in her eyes. I knew that something had captured her attention, that something was wrong, but even as she told me about the shooting I couldn't imagine the extent of the casualties. I was later sitting across from my mom on the couch, watching the scene unfold, as the news broke that this was no longer one of the largest, but the largest mass shooting in our country's history.
It hasn't made sense all day. I see the news, I hear what people are saying, I see what's being written online, and I still don't understand it all. How could one person take so many lives and injur so many more, and all less than an hour from my house? As the day progressed, I've heard that Cast Members who work at Disney World may have been at the club where this all took place, though I haven't seen that confirmed yet. But when I first heard that this took place so close to Disney, my mind immediately went to the people with whom I work because I didn't know if they went to that club at all. I am so thankful that none of my co-workers were near the tragedy.
Fifty people were killed. Fifty-three more were injured.
I hope that everyone hugged their loved ones a little tighter today. You never know what tomorrow may bring.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of those whose lives where lost, the victims who are still struggling to overcome their injuries, the LGBTQ community, the people of Orlando, and our country as a whole.
