Welcome back to Taylor Talks!
Today is a very special day in my house and I couldn't let it go by without publicly acknowledging the incredible man we are honoring. Welcome back to Taylor Talks!
My parents are a funny pair of people. No, really, I think that sometimes they are just super corny, but a lot of times they're pretty hilarious. Welcome back to Taylor Talks!
Today is National Grandparents' Day, which is basically a day to honor your grandparents and tell them how much they mean to you. I feel like I've heard about this day in past years, but for some reason, it seems to have received a lot more attention this year. Then again, maybe I'm just paying more attention this year. Either way, I wanted to recognize this day in honor of the grandparents I've been fortunate to call my own. Welcome back to Taylor Talks!
The other day, I wrote about how we came up with names for our dogs, and I mentioned that I would have to share the story behind my name. I figured that I would take the opportunity to share my name story tonight. Welcome back to Taylor Talks! Today, I got to experience the joy of adoption from a brand new perspective! You would think that I'm so used to adoption that there wouldn't be any new way to experience it, but wow, was today different! Back in December, one of my mom's cousins adopted and he and his wife became parents for the first time. The amazing part? They adopted a sibling group of five from another country. They went from having no kids to being instant parents of five kids. It was incredible, and we were all in awe of them. We knew that as lucky as they felt to have these amazing kids, the kids were just as lucky to have them as parents.
Since the kids were getting adjusted to new lives, learning a new language, and it was freezing cold in the middle of winter, there were no family get-togethers or anything for the whole extended family to meet the kids. But now that it's nice out, school is ending, and we're on a timeline with our impending move, my mom's cousin decided to take the drive up and meet with our family and just a few other family members. His wife stayed home with the two youngest kids, but he brought the three oldest, and the whole hour-long drive down to meet up with them, I couldn't help but feel butterflies. I was so excited to meet my new cousins, even though the oldest is eight years younger than me. I didn't know if we'd have anything to talk about, or if they would hang out with my siblings and not really talk to me. I didn't know if they would be shy or outgoing, have fun personalities or sit around and stare at us, and I wasn't even sure how good their English was at this point. I had no idea about anything because before today, they were just complete strangers who had been adopted by family members. I knew nothing about them, but I could't wait to hug them all and welcome them into the family with open arms. My family has been through the adoption process five times. I should be totally used to it by now. But I have never been on this end of it, preparing to meet new family members who were just adopted and are just still learning about our whole crazy family. I had never felt like this before, and I couldn't help but wonder if the rest of our family felt like this whenever they were meeting one of my new siblings. But at the same time, it was different; whenever I got a new sibling, we didn't know if they would be staying forever. Meeting our new cousins today, we already knew that they were part of the family for life, whether they were happy about the mess of nut jobs they were being stuck with or not! It was so amazing to finally meet the kids and really feel like family. Of course we had seen plenty of pictures and knew all of their names, but now we actually got to hug them and talk to them, and it was suddenly real. It was incredible! I'm so glad that we got to welcome them to the family in person finally. Now I just can't wait to meet their little brother and sister and get a picture with the whole family all together... it's great having five new cousins in the family! When I get to 150 likes on my Facebook author page, I'm going to share something about my first novel. I need 53 likes to hit that milestone, so I'd really love it if you would support my writing career by taking a few seconds and liking the page yourself. The other day, my brother started asking my mom all sorts of questions about all of the foster kids that we've taken in. I have no idea what brought up the topic, or why he was suddenly so interested, but the conversation went on for quite a while. Welcome back to Taylor Talks!
I thought I would stick with my topic from last night and talk about siblings a little more. Welcome back to Taylor Talks!
I was just thinking about adoption, and more specifically, the adoptions that we've had in our family. Each adoption is a celebration with family and friends, but it's not just our immediate family that get official new titles like "mom," "brother," "sister," or "dad." People outside of the immediate family also get new titles when a child becomes an official part of our family. |
AboutMy family started doing foster care when I was three years old. We took in nineteen children over the course of eighteen years, with our last placement leaving in December 2014. I'm the only biological child in my family, though my parents adopted five of my siblings.
I love to share my perspective on the foster care system and share how my unique upbringing shaped my life. I'm also a Cast Member at Walt Disney World and lover of all things Disney! My career allows me the opportunity to find a little bit of Magic in life every day. I enjoy sharing my journey as a writer as well.
