It's Foster Parent Friday once again, so today I'm featuring an anonymous interview with a foster parent from Queensland, Australia. For all of the interviews I've featured so far, just click on the Foster Parent Friday category by following this link or looking at the Categories on the right side of any blog page.
"10 years."
Do you do respite, short-term, or long-term care?
"All."
How many children have you taken in over that period of time?
"Over 50."
Do you limit your care to a certain age group? If so, what ages do you take in?
"No."
Have you ever adopted any children? If so, how many?
"No."
Did you have any biological children when you started foster care? If so, how many? How old were they at the time?
"Yes, 4, aged 25, 21, 17, & 16."
What were your biggest concerns as you started your foster care journey?
"We would be considered too old, and that we would struggle to hand children back to their bio parents."
What is the biggest lesson you have learned from being a foster parent?
"That even though we don't always agree with department decisions, we can accept them. Oh, and that even though a child may no longer be with you physically, they are always in your heart."
Is there anything you would change about your experience as a foster parent?
"No."
Do you have any words of wisdom for future or new foster parents?
"Always stay true to yourself and don't be afraid to put your own needs above the needs of the children in your care."
