Disney On My Mind

Welcome back to Taylor Talks!

If you know me, you know that I absolutely LOVE Disney! Whether it's a Disney movie, Disney World, talking about Walt Disney himself, or singing Disney songs, I love just about everything related to the Walt Disney Company.
I'm always looking up new facts about anything Disney related, and I follow the many aspects of the Disney Company on different forms of social media. Today, some interesting information popped up that told me that today is the anniversary of the opening day of Magic Kingdom. Well, since Magic Kingdom is just about my favorite place in the whole world, I figured that I had to do something to celebrate the anniversary in my own way.

A few weeks ago, I had gotten a song stuck in my head that I hadn't listened to in a while. It was "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes," from the movie Cinderella. But the version that was playing on a loop in my head was actually the version sung by the Disney Channel Circle of Stars, from the early 2000s. It was sung by all of the stars whose shows I watched constantly on Disney Channel. So since the song was stuck in my head, I figured why not try to translate it into sign language? It would give me a new project to work on, and give me a chance to use ASL outside of the classes I'm teaching.

So for the past few weeks, I've been working on the translation and figuring out how to interpret the song. I've practiced every time I was alone in my bedroom, and worked on getting the signs memorized. Yesterday, I finally felt good enough to try to record myself performing the song. But of course, this is my house that we're talking about; I waited too long to record and ended up trying to do it after the kids were home from school, so I kept getting interrupted.

Today, however, when I saw that it was the anniversary of the opening of Magic Kingdom, I knew that I wanted to make it a point to get the video recorded and posted online today. So that was my project for the day. It probably took over twenty takes, between the sound not working and me laughing in the middle of the song, but I finally got the song recorded. I put it on YouTube earlier today, and I wanted to share it here tonight. {Please excuse the weird face in the thumbnail of the video haha!}
I hope you enjoyed the song! Let me know what you think about it in the comments below!

Thank you so much for your continued support! I look forward to sharing more stories about my experience with foster care, and hopefully hearing from readers who have questions or similar stories to share. I'm always willing to answer questions and hear about other experiences! Please don't forget to like and share my Facebook author page as well!

I’d greatly appreciate it if you would share this blog with friends and family through your favorite social media sites. If you’re sharing on Twitter, don’t forget to tag me (@TayTayK02) and use the hashtag #TaylorTalks.

Thanks!
Taylor

I used to know ASL, took classes for a couple of years way back when I was younger, but never used it, so I lost it. Recognized a few signs, but you did an amazing job!! Really good!

Thank you so much, Pam! Teaching sign language classes and making videos every so often really helps me retain what I've learned, but I hope to continue with more advanced classes in the future!

It's so cool that you sign songs. I'm trying to learn sign language, and for any other language I've learned people have told me to go watch a movie in it to really get a feel for the language, but there really aren't any movies in ASL (at least not on netflix!), so I watch a lot of songs in sign language. Anyways, thanks for doing that - it's awesome!

Hi Dawn! Thanks so much for watching my video! While I'm not sure about Netflix, I know that there are movies that are done entirely in ASL. Maybe you could try searching for them online and then seeing if you could get them through your local library. I remember going to an ASL movie showing while I was in college and it was great; there were members of the local Deaf Community as well as students and professors from the Deaf Studies program. I would highly recommend watching a movie if you're able to get one in your possession!

    About

My family started doing foster care when I was three years old. We took in nineteen children over the course of eighteen years, with our last placement leaving in December 2014. I'm the only biological child in my family, though my parents adopted five of my siblings.

I love to share my perspective on the foster care system and share how my unique upbringing shaped my life.

I'm also a Cast Member at Walt Disney World and lover of all things Disney! My career allows me the opportunity to find a little bit of Magic in life every day.

I enjoy sharing my journey as a writer as well. Find my children's books on Amazon and keep following my blog for updates on future books that I'll be releasing!
