Tonight, I thought I would just touch a little on the different foster care agencies that exist. Some people may not realize that there are different agencies out there.
My parents are licensed through the New York State agency. The children that we take in, however, just come from all over our county. DSS tries to keep children as close to home as possible because of things like parent visits and court hearings and such. There are state agencies all over the United States, and I'm sure there are similar agencies in other countries as well.
There are also private agencies for foster care and adoption. I don't know much about these private agencies, as we do not work with any of them. When I provide information about foster care and our experiences, the information applies to the state agency that we work with; I cannot guarantee that the same information applies for private agencies.
No matter what agency you choose to work with, becoming a foster parent will help children in need immensely. I would definitely recommend researching different agencies in your local area before becoming licensed.
